Grant Summary
$25,000 over 12 months to lay the groundwork for a new first-year requirement organized around common readings, to be offered by all ten undergraduate residential colleges. The common core seminar, known as College 1, will orient students to the UCSC community and provide a common context anchored in the humanities to explore their programs of study, which overwhelmingly are professionally focused. The tentative reading list under development focuses on the theme of cultivating attention. The planning team will also develop topical general education certificates mandated by its strategic plan.
