Grant Summary

$175,000 over 24 months to extend a highly integrative approach to general education organized around common readings long enjoyed by students in its Hutchins School of Liberal Studies so it benefits a broader swath of its undergraduate student body. The Hutchins curriculum emphasizes close reading of core texts in small seminar-style sections, with syllabi shared across all sections. Hutchins students are grouped in cohorts and efficiently complete all general education distribution requirements through an intensive series of four interdisciplinary courses, one each semester during their first and second years at Sonoma State. The expansion of the Hutchins approach will be conducted with particular attention to undeclared students who would benefit from the community building that comes from participation in a common intellectual experience and would be able to efficiently meet a substantial portion of general education requirements through integrated coursework.
