Grant Summary

$250,000 over 42 months to implement Space is Place, a Knowledge for Freedom program that will give promising underserved high school seniors from southwestern Pennsylvania an opportunity to participate in a three-week humanities seminar and a school-year college support and civic engagement program. The seminar will focus on the theme of place and pose questions about the students’ responsibility to their region. Students will read transformative texts from Plato, Aristotle, and Abraham Lincoln as well as primary sources like original journals and letters of Greene County historical figures, and go on field trips to regional historic sites. Throughout the year, they will return to campus to receive college access support and work on local history projects that serve the Greene County community.
