Susanna Ashton, professor of English at Clemson University, presented on how she teaches Mark Twain’s Huckleberry Finn and Percival Everett’s James as part of a first-year general education course.

This workshop took place on Wednesday, October 8, 2025 and is part of a series on what can be done to strengthen general education—as students move into STEM, business, health, and other pre-professional fields—to ensure that college students, whatever their major or background, encounter inspiring works of literature and philosophy and grasp the power of the humanities and its relevance to their professional aspirations.
